What Makes a Wardrobe Complete?

Each and every day, we pass hundreds of people on the streets, in hallways, and on the subway while never speaking a word to them. However, despite a lack of communicating verbally, we still make decisions as to the intentions and trustworthiness of these people. If you have any doubt of this, try dressing in a trench coat and covering your face with a ski mask. Then start gesticulating wildly using your arms. In mere minutes, the cops show up and you realize that even though you never spoke a word, your appearance has spoken volumes.

That means that you need to dress in such a way that people will judge you the way you want to be judged. If you want to be treated like a criminal, dress like one. If you want doors to open for you, dress like a professional.

Here is a quick look at a few items you need in your wardrobe that will make people think that you are a professional and well put together.

Dress Shirts

Most of the dress shirts made for men are not really outstanding.  They tend to all be made from the same type of fabric and even have the same weave. You really can get great performance menswear, though. You can get shirts that will wick the moisture away from your body while being comfortable. You might also prefer them to be resistant to wrinkles and easy to care for – meaning machine washable.

This is definitely a part of your wardrobe that you need to spend a bit more money on in order to get the quality and longevity you want from it. The good news is that this is also one of those versatile items that can be worn with a multitude of different things. You can get these must haves for a men’s wardrobe in a variety of neutral colors, including a crisp white, and always look great.

Chinos

Chinos are definitely something that every man should have in his wardrobe. These might just be the most versatile out of all types of men’s pants. They will look fantastic with a button down, sweater, or a T-shirt, and can even be dressed up to wear to any sort of business event. They also happen to be a great alternative to jeans, due to them breathing easier and being more comfortable. This can be especially true when the weather is warmer because the cotton twill fabric will breathe much easier than your denim jeans. Chinos also give you an ideal avenue for adding a bit of color to an otherwise bland wardrobe.

Shoes

No man’s wardrobe is ever complete without shoes. You need dress shoes in either brown or black (or both). For starters, you can just buy some Oxford or derby lace-up shoes. Once you have those, try to extend your shoe collection a bit with a pair of brogues, some chukka boots, etc. If you are looking for a place with a lot of options, try Allen Edmonds. Remember that it is ok to splurge a bit on better quality shoes because they will last you longer and be more comfortable.

Belts

Did you know that you only need 4 belts at any given time? Yes, your pants need to fit without necessitating a belt to hold them up, but you still need belts for your wardrobe to be complete. Aside from holding pants up, they work to break your outfit up. You need 2 types of belts. You need 2 casual belts and 2 dress belts. You need a brown one and a black one of each.

Leather Jacket

There are many different styles and types of leather jackets. There are biker jackets and bomber jackets, and even leather trench coats. The biker jackets tend to be a bit much when you consider all of the buttoned lapels and collars, zippered cuffs, and buckle straps, but if you are into that sort of thing, go for it! You tend to see more of the bomber style leather jackets and this piece is one that is truly timeless and should be a part of every wardrobe.

With these items completing your wardrobe, and by keeping them clean and fresh looking when you wear them, you have a better chance of not being judged too harshly on appearances alone.
